| Thirteen work-release inmates walked |

IDAHO - When Canyon County offenders are allowed to leave the county Work Release Center in Caldwell each morning to go to their jobs, they might not come back. Thirteen inmates have walked away so far this year, and 39 in 2007. But until Caldwell police announced this month that reputed gang member Alejandro Almeida was missing, the walk-aways drew scant public notice. This year's walk-aways represent 2.8 percent of the 457 offenders booked into the work center through mid-September, according to sheriff's statistics. Eight of the 13 are still at large. While much lower than initially publicized estimates of about five per month, the numbers are far higher than the figures reported in Ada County, which reports two walk-aways among more than 650 work-release inmates so far this year.
