CALIFORNIA - Food for about 25,000, three times a day. That’s the county and state’s responsibility: To feed the thousands of inmates in prison and jails throughout Kern County — that’s more people than in Taft and Arvin, combined. But inmates do more than just eat. They also prepare food, clean kitchens, bake cakes and serve grub, in some places earning enough to buy goodies from a jail shop. “People have no idea how time-intensive, and comprehensive jail food service is,” said Paul Verke, spokesman for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
