| City sues sheriff to stop early releases |

CALIFORNIA - A Fresno County judge will soon decide whether Sheriff Margaret Mims is allowed to release jail inmates awaiting trial in the future. Fresno city officials on Monday filed suit alleging that Mims violated the law and was attempting to "further her budget negotiations" with county supervisors when she released 72 inmates earlier this month. The early releases stopped after supervisors funded her budget with an additional $2.8 million. The city contends the jail had 300 vacant beds when Mims began the releases. Read more.
