| Furlough plan draws union ire |

MARYLAND - County unions are pushing back hard against a plan to furlough 5,900 employees for two weeks without pay during the next nine months. The plan was unveiled Sept. 15 by County Executive Jack B. Johnson (D) and unanimously approved by the County Council less than 24 hours later. The next day, about three dozen officers from the county Department of Corrections gathered in Upper Marlboro to drum up public support against the action. The corrections officers, most of them clad in white or black "DOC" (Department of Corrections) T-shirts, convened near the lake outside the County Administration Building and handed out fliers opposing the two-week unpaid furloughs.
