ALABAMA - Next Wednesday, the already dangerous situation at Alabama’s prisons will become even worse. On Oct. 1, corrections officers at seven of the prisons will begin working 12-hour shifts. Administrators don’t like the change, but they say there’s no choice. The Department of Corrections is millions of dollars in the hole. Prisons commissioner Richard Allen said he hopes the move will reduce overtime and produce a $3 million to $4 million savings annually. The savings could put a dent in a funding shortfall that hit $30 million last year. Strapped for cash, the prison system has resorted to desperate measures, like selling property it owns around the state. It has shelved plans to replace the deteriorating 66-year-old Tutwiler Prison for Women, and it has delayed millions of dollars in maintenance work. Read more.
