| Suit challenges felon releases |

KENTUCKY - Attorney General Jack Conway said yesterday that he has filed suit to stop the Department of Corrections from releasing certain felons from prison and parole supervision. A hearing is scheduled this morning before Franklin Circuit Judge Phillip Shepherd to determine whether the state should stop the program until the suit is decided. Kentucky has released more than 3,600 felons from prison and parole supervision since the end of May in an effort, authorized by the legislature and implemented by Gov. Steve Beshear, to save $30 million in the next two years. All had been sent back to prison for parole violations but received credit against their sentences for the time they were out on parole. The credit is not limited to nonviolent offenders and has been applied to at least eight murderers and eight rapists. Read more.
