| Jail gets bigger federal grant |

VIRGINIA - Loudoun County is getting a $474,070 federal grant to help cover costs at its crowded jail, more than triple the amount the county received last year, the county Sheriff's Office said Tuesday. Loudoun was awarded $133,000 from the Department of Justice last year to help offset jail expenses. The boost in funding can be attributed to the increase in jail employee overtime costs and the growing number of inmates and personnel at the facility, said Michelle Draper, financial budget manager for the Sheriff's Office. The Justice Department sets the guidelines on how the jail can use the grant. For example, the funds can go toward overtime costs, salaries for corrections officers and training and education programs for inmates, according to the agency's Web site. Read more.
