| Report: Scrap sentences less than three months |

SCOTLAND - It is being recommended that prison sentences of less than three months should be scrapped as part of a major overhaul of Scotland's criminal justice system. Reform Scotland is also calling for senior criminal prosecutors to be directly-elected, making them more accountable to the public. Reform Scotland's report Power to Protect says jail terms of under 90 days are ineffective and expensive, offer no opportunity for rehabilitation and often they actually push offenders towards a career in crime. Last year over 2,000 people were sent to prison for a period of less than five weeks. The independent think tank also calls for an end to automatic early release which, it says, makes a mockery of the justice system. Any reduction in time served should be as a result of good behaviour only and not be used simply to stop overcrowding. Read more.
