| Overtime money outlays mount |

NEW YORK - The Dutchess County Sheriff's Office needs $575,000 to pay for overtime costs at the jail. The office had budgeted about $2 million for overtime this year, but that proved inadequate for the county's needs. Additional hours were needed to cover transporting a larger-than-expected number of inmates, who were being housed in out-of-county facilities; to man juvenile and courts; to provide additional supervision for inmates with medical issues; and to settle a Fair Labor Standards Act lawsuit. The sheriff's office also had a situation in which officers had to constantly patrol the building for fires after the fire alarm system in the jail broke in December, Capt. Todd Gdula, chief of jail operations, said. Six extra officers were put on shifts to patrol the building, as well as cover three control rooms during the midnight to 8 a.m. shifts, Gdula said.
