| New effort to focus on violent gang crime |

CALIFORNIA - Faced with increasing violent gang crime, police last month asked the California Highway Patrol and Monterey County Sheriff's Office to join them in their fight by lending their resources. Both agencies, along with the county Probation Department and the state Department of Corrections Parole Division, have agreed to help, police said. The joint effort dubbed "Operation Impact" will focus on violent gang crime in addition to drug sales and vehicle code violations. Police say that in addition to drive-by-shootings, many of the crimes that take place, such as burglaries, robberies and assaults, involve vehicles. Read more.
