| Jail officers protest firings |

CANADA - The province says three fired jail [officers] used excessive force to subdue an inmate, but the [officers’] union says the three men were protecting a fellow officer. About 30 [officers] and supporters marched Tuesday outside the Justice Department offices in Halifax to protest last week’s terminations and the suspension of nine other [officers] after an Aug. 1 incident at the Central Nova Scotia Correctional Facility in Dartmouth. Fired guards Chris Fraser, Chris Dixon and Rob Hutchinson each declined to comment at Tuesday’s rally on Terminal Road and referred all questions to the union. On Aug. 1, a corrections officer was punched in the face by an "unpredictable" inmate who "has assaulted staff in the past," said Jim Gosse, president of Nova Scotia Government and General Employees Union, Local 480.
