NEW YORK - The Putnam Legislature unanimously ratified a five-year pact last week that is retroactive to 2007 and calls for a total 16-percent salary hike for the officers through 2011. Officer Robert Wendover, president of the association, was pleased, calling the pact a "long time in coming. We worked hard for our membership and thank Sheriff Don Smith for being with us 100-percent." Wendover was asked why the negotiations took so long to complete. "Money," was the reply: "No one wants to give up the money on either side. They want to keep the money and we need it for our hard working officers." Read more.
