ALABAMA - Montgomery County Circuit Judge Eugene Reese last week took a stance in favor of the public's right to know how its business is being conducted when he ordered the Alabama Department of Corrections to release documents on how an inmate died. The records were being sought by the mother of Farron Barksdale, 32, who was found comatose in his cell on Aug. 11, 2007, just three days after arriving in the state prison system. He died in a hospital after being taken off life support a few days later. Barksdale, who had suffered from mental illness, was sentenced to prison after pleading guilty to killing two Athens police officers in 2004. Controversy over Barksdale's death revolves in part over claims by the sheriff of Limestone County that his office received a call from the hospital indicating Barksdale appeared to have been severely beaten, according to an Associated Press report.
