| Tougher property crimes penalties offered |

OREGON - Both Measures 61 and 57 aim to increase penalties for certain property and drug crimes. Both are projected to cost the state millions, and both will increase the state prison population. Measure 57 proponents say Measure 61, with its mandatory minimum sentences, goes too far. Supporters of Measure 61 say Measure 57, which increases sentences for repeat offenders, doesn’t go far enough. John Gardin, director of behavioral health and research at ADAPT in Roseburg, would prefer not to see either measure become law. But in an effort to defeat one, Gardin is asking voters to choose the other. “Every poll says these are passing by huge margins,” Gardin said at a recent gathering to educate the public about the proposed laws. “We just cannot afford for 61 to pass.” Read more.
