VIRGINIA - Cuts in the corrections budget will hit Southern Virginia with the closing of the Chatham Diversion Center, resulting in the loss of 20 jobs. According to state budget reduction plan, announced last week by Gov. Tim Kaine, the savings produced in FY 2009 by closing the center will be used to pay severance and other costs. The governor projected that savings from the closing would be realized in 2010. His plan stated that diversion centers have been underutilized by judges and have not operated at full capacity. The impact of another corrections budget cut, which eliminates a planning grant for a proposed prison in Charlotte County, is less clear. Read more.
