| Fire causes cell design rethink |

NEW ZEALAND - Inmates at Paremoremo prison's east wing in Auckland have been setting fire to toilet paper and towels, and throwing them through the bars at prison guards. The guards' union is calling for a "no nonsense" approach to the behaviour that it says is contributing to the draining of its members' morale at New Zealand's only maximum security prison. Corrections Association president Beven Hanlon said inmates caught lighting fires should have all privileges stripped till their behaviour improved. "They should be operating the prison like it's meant to be - tough. Keep them locked in their cells all day. There are a lot of animals in that prison and they need to be sorted out. Read more.
