GEORGIA - The defense in the Brian Nichols murder trial on Monday sought to establish that conditions in the Fulton County jail were deplorable when Nichols was charged with the rape of a former girlfriend and held without bond in the jail in August 2004. Nichols was held in the facility for eight months until he escaped from a holding cell in the Fulton County Courthouse on March 11, 2005. He is accused of going on a rampage and killing four people — Superior Court Judge Rowland Barnes, court reporter Julie Ann Brandau, deputy Hoyt Teasley, and federal agent David Wilhelm. In his videotaped confession played for jurors earlier in the trial, Nichols complained that the Fulton County jail was overcrowded and he witnessed abuses by jail guards, though he himself was not a victim of those abuses. He has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to the killings. His attorneys have tried to establish that Nichols’ mind began to deteriorate after he broke up with his long-time girlfriend in July of 2004. While in that deteriorating, delusional state of mind, they contend, Nichols raped that woman in August 2004, and — eight months later — went on his alleged killing spree. Read more.
