TEXAS - Gov. Rick Perry has ordered a lockdown of Texas prisons and a search of all inmates after a cell phone was confiscated Monday from a condemned killer. Investigators allege Richard Tabler's mother bought minutes for the cell phone, which Tabler used to call Houston Sen. John Whitmire and make threatening remarks about the lawmaker's daughters. Perry says [an officer] allegedly accepted a bribe to deliver the cell phone. Whitmire chairs the Senate committee on criminal justice. "The individual who contacted me was sharing that phone with nine other Texas death row inmates," said Whitmire. "These death row inmates are in single cell- the most secure cells we have in the system- and they were able to get that phone to nine other individuals in the last 30 days." Read more.
