AUSTRALIA - Instead of periodic detention, criminals could be given curfews, electronic tags, drug and alcohol tests and be sent to rehabilitation as part of a NSW government proposal to introduce a community-based sentence. NSW Attorney General John Hatzistergos today released a consultation paper on the Intensive Corrections Order (ICO), inviting public comment on the proposed new sentencing option which has the backing of victims groups and legal experts. "In January, the NSW Sentencing Council, which is headed by Justice James wood and includes three of the state's key victims groups, recommended the abolition of periodic detention and the creation of a new order,'' Mr Hatzistergos said in a statement. "The proposed Intensive Corrections Order could force offenders to make changes to their lives which they would not do themselves.'' |
