| New sex crime law proposed |

VERMONT - Vermont's State Senate Judiciary Committee detailed some of its draft legislation on sex offenses at a public hearing in Burlington Thursday. About 35 people attended the committee's fifth public hearing, which followed a full day of the seventh special committee session on the topic. Sen. Dick Sears (D-Bennington) has held special Judiciary Committee meetings since the summer, when Vermont preteen Brooke Bennett was killed. Any action by the Legislature would come after the next biennial begins in January 2009. However, Sears said the committee planned to unveil a comprehensive package Friday that includes the creation of a new sex crime called "aggravated sexual assault on a child under the age of 16."
