Bill to deny early release for felony DWI

ARKANSAS - A state lawmaker announced plans Wednesday to introduce a bill in next year’s legislative session that would exempt felony DWI offenders from early release because of jail overcrowding. Rep. Dan Greenberg, R-Little Rock, said the need for such a law was brought to his attention after a Saline County woman convicted of driving while intoxicated 10 times was released early from jail last week.

On Nov. 9, 2007, Sheila Blair was sentenced to 10 years in state prison with the stipulation she serve a minimum of 20 months, but she was released last week after serving less than 12 months.

“The current law on DWI is pathetic and ridiculous,” Greenberg said at a news conference. “Someone with 10 DWIs should be serving some serious time.” Read more.
