| Group wants smaller prison population |

MICHIGAN - Seeking a cut in business taxes, the Detroit Regional Chamber on Thursday proposed saving hundreds of millions of dollars a year by lowering Michigan's prison population so it is more in line with other states. "We can't afford the corrections system we have anymore," said Brad Williams, a lobbyist for the group of 20,000 businesses. He acknowledged that "we're going to be asking the Legislature to take some tough votes." This appears to be the first time a business group is weighing in with specific proposals to cut the Michigan Department of Corrections budget, which accounts for a greater share of state spending than in other Great Lakes states. In exchange, the chamber wants to eliminate the 22 percent Michigan Business Tax surcharge that was passed a year ago to balance a budget deficit. Read more.
