| Governors asked to review security |

MANILA, PHILIPPINES - The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) on Monday called on all governors to review with the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) all existing security measures in provincial jails in light of the weekend escape of seven prisoners in a daring jailbreak orchestrated by suspected cadres of the New People’s Army (NPA). Interior Secretary Ronaldo Puno asked provincial governors to coordinate such a review with the BJMP, through Interior and Local Government Undersecretary Marius Corpus, in an effort to improve current security measures in provincial jails and prevent a repeat of Sunday’s jailbreak in the Quezon provincial jail in Lucena City. According to reports, almost a dozen NPA members were able to infiltrate the Quezon provincial jail the other day by posing as anti-narcotics agents dressed in black uniforms with Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency markings and pretending to be turning over a prisoner to the jail guards. The group then fled the provincial jail with the seven prisoners, most of them believed to be ranking NPA officers in Southern Luzon, after disarming the jail guards and locking them up in a cell.
