| Nats renew call for private prisons |

NEW ZEALAND - National believes private management of prisons has worked in the past and wants to introduce it again. The party is advocating a return to the regime installed by the last National government, allowing prison management to be put out for competitive tender on a case-by-case basis. The scheme was scrapped by Labour when it came to power. National's Corrections spokesman Simon Power says Auckland Central Remand Prison established in 1999 is a good example of why privately-run prisons work. He says they only had one escape in five years and the Department of Corrections took on many of the management's ideas. Power says the public system has done a less than adequate job of looking after prisons in the last few years. Read more.
