CALIFORNIA - The Stanislaus County Board of Supervisors told the state Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation on Tuesday that it wasn't interested in putting a state prison "re-entry facility" in the county. The 3-0 consent calendar vote probably kills the county's chances of getting a $39.79 million state grant to expand the county's jail complex on Hackett Road. Supervisors Bill O'Brien, Dick Monteith and Jim DeMartini approved the consent calendar. Supervisors Tom Mayfield and Jeff Grover were absent. The county needs to add 420 beds to the jail complex to alleviate overcrowding, and the estimated cost of the expansion is $79 million. The state is offering the county $39.79 million for the project, with the county required to match the money. The state money comes from Assembly Bill 900, a law that authorizes more than $7 billion in bonds to help counties expand jails. Read more.
