Corrections problem at the top, NDP says

CANADA - With an unprecedented four separate reviews of recent troubling incidents within the court and jail system now underway, the Opposition NDP says the problem rests at the top of the Ministry of Corrections, Public Safety and Policing. The latest incident under review came to light Thursday in a StarPhoenix story about Kyle Dufresne, a Saskatchewan man mistakenly imprisoned for six months longer than his original 45-day sentence.

External and internal reviews are also underway on an August escape of six inmates from the Regina jail and the failure to immediately notify the public. The province's top justice official is also reviewing two incidents of prisoners being mistakenly released from courts last week, which in one case led to the suspension of corrections deputy minister Terry Coleman.
