WASHINGTON - Before Snohomish County starts laying off people and seriously affecting the livelihoods of hundreds of employees, they may need to take a look at how efficient their own operation is. I used to work for the Corrections Department and I see in an Oct. 24 Herald article that the department is looking to cut 14 current jobs and not fill 10 more open spots. If the county truly wants to save money due to the budget shortfall why aren't they looking for ways to run the Corrections Department more efficiently? The Corrections Department has constantly been the largest source of overtime of any county department, at times topping nearly $3 million a year. I can attest to this as before I left the department I was able to voluntarily work 224 hours of just overtime in a one month pay period. I took home nearly $10,000 that month and would have been allowed to do it each and every month without question. Read more.
