| Measures could bring jobs but less treatment |

OREGON - Ron Root, 39, is the first to admit his story has been told before. “You get money to get the dope,” Root said, dressed in his blue denim Deer Ridge Correctional Institution uniform. “It’s a story everyone in here has,” Root said. “Some will take 20 minutes to tell you, but it’s the same story.” On Tuesday, voters could pass one of two competing measures that could change the story for those convicted of certain drug and property crimes. Both measures on the ballot would increase penalties for nonviolent offenders. But one measure offers drug treatment for inmates and lengthens sentences, while the other creates mandatory minimum sentences. Read more.
