| Discussion focuses on federal revenue |

TENNESSEE - The Greene County Commission on Monday evening discussed a variety of options for dealing with inmate overcrowding in hopes of avoiding decertification of the Greene County Detention Center. At a commission workshop session, County Sheriff Steve Burns continued to emphasize that he believes that whatever the county does needs to be large enough to house enough additional federal prisoners to use per-diem rates the county receives from housing those prisoners to pay for a new facility without a tax increase. Burns pointed out that the county government already relies on revenue from housing an average of 54 federal inmates to balance the current budget, and has avoided property tax increases in this way for several years. "For the last several years, the county has relied on (revenue from) state and federal prisoners to offset property taxes," Burns said. Read more.
