PHILIPPINES - The release of Claudio Teehankee Jr. and the prospect of Rolito Go regaining his freedom have put the New Bilibid Prison, the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) and the Department of Justice in media limelight. I empathize with the victims and their families in voicing their resistance to set the prisoners free. I am aware that the privilege of the President to grant pardon has a political dimension. I also understand the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines’ concern over the government’s proper method to reform the inmates before they are released. But amid the brewing controversies, and there is a myriad of reasons for the shortcomings of our criminal justice, I see a glimmer of hope for change inside the BuCor.
