NEW JERSEY - Democrat Benjamin Byrd defeated Republican John Bennett by a nearly 2-to-1 margin in Tuesday's election for township committee. Byrd received 1,298 votes to Bennett's 690 in a race for the seat soon to be vacated by retiring Committeeman Craig Thomas. There were no write-in candidates. "I'd like to thank God and thank the people that came out and voted for me," said Byrd, after learning of the election results. "I'm going to do my best to keep an eye on the finances of the township, working with the committee as best I can." Byrd, who works as a corrections officer at Bayside State Prison and serves as chairman of the Fairfield planning/zoning board, attributed his large margin of victory to people in the township already knowing his name and personality.
