SCOTLAND - Scotland's Chief Inspector of Prisons today singled out a visit to Edinburgh's Saughton jail by an 80-year-old Swiss-born spiritual leader as a sign of hope. In his annual report on the state of Scotland's prisons, Dr Andrew McLellan recalled a talk to inmates by Jean Vanier, the founder of L'Arche, a community for people with learning difficulties and their helpers. Dr McLellan, a former Kirk Moderator and one time minister of St Andrew's and St George's Church in George Street, said it was "the best experience I had in prisons recently". "He spoke to 50 prisoners for nearly an hour, and not one wished it shorter," said Dr McLellan. "He spoke about pain and he invited prisoners to change." |
