CALIFORNIA - Crime victims gained a stronger presence in the fabric of the state's justice system with voter approval Tuesday of Proposition 9. The measure, approved on a vote of 53 percent to 47 percent, placed into the state constitution 17 rights for victims, their families and their representatives. They include rights of notification throughout the prosecution and parole processes, including the ability to attend hearings and confer with district attorneys on the filing of charges. "This is a historic day for crime victims throughout California and a message to the nation," said Harriet Salarno, founder and president of Crime Victims United of California. "Now the victims will be in the California state constitution and we will now be given the respect that we deserve." Read more.
