| Inmate crews expand trails system |

NORTH CAROLINA - Mt. Jefferson State Natural Area added a new route in July to its current system of trails which now offers hikers and visitors approximately two hours of trail to traverse. The park’s latest addition is known as “The Lost Province Trail” which is a reference to the desolate and remoteness of the area during the winter time of centuries past. Many outsiders of the area found it to be impossible to penetrate the High Country prior to the advent of automobiles and modern transportation and natives found it equally as challenging when attempting to reach the foothills and Piedmont regions. Fortunately, the trail is not as remote as its name may indicate. The trail itself takes approximately one half hour to navigate. The entire hiking system in the park only consists of an hour and a half journey. Park Ranger Tracy Minton explained that the trail is one of three venues that the park currently offers as it will entertain hikers along with the Summit and Rhododendron trails. Remarkably, the three trails offer visitors the opportunity to gaze over majestic Appalachian peaks from North Carolina, Virginia, and Tennessee. Read more.
