NEW YORK - The state-prison system plans to close its 12 farms and some of its dormitories over the next few months as part of a plan to save $8.7 million and eliminate 178 correction-officer positions, Corrections Commissioner Brian Fischer announced today. The agency plans to consolidate housing units at 14 men's medium and minimum- security prisons, merge two prison infirmaries and reduce transportation of inmates among prisons. "These management actions are part of our continuing effort to operate the department more effectively and efficiently while continuing to deliver the core programs and services critical to preparing inmates for their return to the community," Fischer said. The housing-unit consolidations are planned for Adirondack in Essex County, Gowanda in Erie County, Hudson in Columbia County, Mid-State, Mohawk and Oneida in Oneida County, Ogdensburg in St. Lawrence County, Otisville in Orange County, Watertown in Jefferson County, the Annex at Washington Correctional Facility in Washington County, Mt. McGregor in Saratoga County, Camp Pharsalia in Chenango County, Monterey in Schuyler County and Moriah in Essex County. Read more.
