NEW YORK - The New York State Department of Correctional Services announced another cost saving consolidation plan. This one would save the state nearly $9 million, and will affect the five facilities in Oneida County. The good news for current corrections officers, and other employees at the prisons, is they will not lose their job. The bad news is jobs that are currently open, or would eventually be open through attrition, will not be filled. The $8.7 million savings plan is the second such plan put out by the Department of Correctional Services. The highlights of this current plan will consolidate housing for inmates at 15 men's medium and minimum security correctional facilities, and merge various infirmaries around the state. Those initiatives, along with some other smaller changes, are expected to reduce 134 correction officer positions, through attrition and vacancies. Of the 11 facilities consolidated, three are in Oneida County are affected, including Mid - State, Mohawk and Oneida. Read more.
