NEW YORK - The Mount McGregor Correctional Facility will lose a prisoner dormitory but no employees as part of the state’s plan to cut costs. Department of Correctional Services spokesman Erik Kriss said 14 prisons around the state will see consolidated housing units as part of a plan to shave $8.7 million from the annual budget. “The consolidations will take effect almost immediately. These are management actions that don’t require legislative approval,” Kriss said. Earlier this year, Gov. David Paterson called for all state agencies to closely scrutinize their operations and reduce spending in response to the state’s ongoing fiscal crisis. Commissioner of Correctional Services Brian Fischer said Thursday that cost-cutting plans around the state will include merging infirmaries where two prisons are close to one another, decommissioning prison farm operations and eliminating transportation of inmates by one day per week.
