INDIANA - Earlier this year, Sheriff Ken Fries made a decision that rightly intended to protect the safety of convicted criminals in work release but significantly reduced the number of people who can participate in the program that helps families and taxpayers. The new restriction should spur county officials to again seek to combine the housing for work release participants with the Re-Entry Court program, which desperately needs housing for offenders who are returning to Fort Wayne from state prison. And the combined housing facility should be moved from the current work release center on the grounds of Byron Health Center off Lima Road to a more centralized location accessible by bus. Early this year, a work release inmate was walking to his job about four miles away when he was struck and killed by a car. Read more.
