OpEd: Crime needs more than black pride

AUSTRALIA - Every time Muhammad Ali won a fight a strange and welcome phenomenon could be observed in US ghettoes. For at least a few days, from Harlem to Watts, a surge of pride among black youth sent the crime rate to the mat.

Now black America has a new heavyweight champion, symbolically far more powerful than Ali, Joe Louis, George Foreman or Mike Tyson combined. One of their own has fought all the way to the White House. An African-American is now the most important man in the world. And perhaps this will have a similar effect. To expect Obama to KO black crime simply by winning the ultimate title fight is clearly fanciful, but it might help. And help is desperately needed. Read more.
