| Judge orders settlement talks |

KENTUCKY - Franklin Circuit Judge Phillip Shepherd yesterday ordered the Justice and Public Safety Cabinet and the attorney general's office to try to settle a suit involving the early release of inmates from prison and parole supervision. Shepherd issued the verbal order after hearing nearly four hours of testimony from both sides on the controversial program. The judge also said he plans to rule promptly on a request by Attorney General Jack Conway, whose office filed the suit, to temporarily stop the state from releasing more prisoners under the program.
