| Immigration background checks starting |

TEXAS - Jailers in Dallas County and elsewhere will soon check for inmates' criminal and immigration histories simultaneously. Federal immigration officials told The Associated Press on Tuesday that the Dallas County Sheriff's Office and a few other law enforcement agencies will have access to a new federal fingerprint database link. Dallas County is scheduled to begin using the "Secure Communities" program Wednesday. Gaston, Buncombe, Henderson and Wake counties in North Carolina will begin using "Secure Communities" later this week. The program allows officials at a detention center to receive information the Homeland Security may have on an inmate. Read more.
