A suspended Mercer County (N.J.) corrections officer shot a former inmate dead yesterday afternoon in apparent retaliation over the victim telling investigators about a jailhouse sexual relationship the two women had, authorities and sources alleged. Officer Leslie McMillon, 41, of Scenic Drive in Ewing was charged with murder and weapons offenses yesterday evening after allegedly shooting to death Paula Wilson, 35, at the victim's South Broad Street apartment, a city police spokesman said. McMillon is assigned to the Mercer County Correction Center in Hopewell Township, the county's adult jail, which houses both men and women. After the shooting, Wilson was found dangling precariously from a third-floor fire escape at South Broad Street and Chestnut Avenue at 1:10 p.m. yesterday, moments after numerous people in the area heard between three and six gunshots, police said. Police said Wilson was fleeing from someone shooting at her from inside her apartment. The commercial and residential South Broad Street was full of people at the time, many drawn out by the warm weather. Several said they initially believed the loud popping sounds were from someone using a hammer on metal. But the grisly site of a partially clad, bleeding woman three stories up prompted numerous onlookers and residents to dial 911. Witnesses said a woman was seen leaving the apartment moments later, wearing a sports jersey with the word "Pittsburgh" on the front. Police patrol units, a Trenton EMS ambulance and then detectives converged on the block for the "shots fired" call. But hours later, detectives were investigating a case of murder that apparently began with a sexual relationship between a jail officer and an inmate and turned into an ongoing domestic dispute. McMillon surrendered to police detectives at 5 p.m. yesterday, said police spokesman Lt. Joseph Juniak. Mercer County Executive Brian M. Hughes, whose administration operates the jail, and Juniak said McMillon was suspended from her job in the last week because of a disciplinary case brought by the jail's Internal Affairs Unit. Hughes declined to elaborate, but Juniak added that the motive for the killing was an "ongoing domestic dispute" between Wilson and McMillon from a "previous relationship." |
