MICHIGAN - A Michigan jury has awarded $8.45 million to eight former female prisoners who say they were sexually abused by state prison guards in the 1990s. The women awarded damages on Wednesday are among about 500 former and current prisoners who say they were abused by guards in state prisons. Their cases are being heard in small batches in Washtenaw County Trial Court. Ten current and former prisoners were awarded $15.5 million in damages by a jury earlier this year. A third trial is expected in 2009. Lead attorney Deborah LaBelle tells the Detroit Free Press that the state is responsible for harming the women. Read more.
