VERMONT - State Corrections officials plan to contract with a private prison in Alabama to house up to 80 Vermont inmates, replacing the use of prisons in Tennessee and Oklahoma. Corrections Commissioner Rob Hofmann said he is close to signing the contract with LCS Corrections Services Inc. That company was the low bidder at a rate of about $50 a day per inmate and should offer the state a more stable, long-term arrangement, he said. It will save the state about $200,000 a year from the current contract, he said. The state sends 500 to 600 inmates out of state, most of them to a private prison run by Corrections Corp. of America in Kentucky for $59 a day in an arrangement that will continue, Hofmann said.
