The Anamosa state penitentiary ended a lockdown begun after two security staff members were assaulted last week. Iowa Department of Corrections spokesman Fred Scaletta said the prison had been on lockdown since Thursday, and officials conducted a prison search. Scaletta said inmate Charles Gully, 40, who is serving a life sentence since 1983 for a Webster County (Iowa) murder conviction, stabbed two staff members with a homemade weapon at a general population cellblock. The spokesman said the state penitentiary at Anamosa returned to normal operation Sunday. Scaletta said both staff members suffered superficial wounds and no serious injuries. No charges were filed. Gully was transferred to the Iowa State Penitentiary in Fort Madison, where he's being held at the Clinical Care Unit. Anamosa is about 50 miles southwest of Dubuque. |
