WASHINGTON - Pierce County is set today to open three new courtrooms that judges hope will streamline the criminal justice process. The newly remodeled section on the second floor of the County-City Building will be home to the Superior Court’s so-called “criminal division,” where criminal defendants are arraigned, attend routine hearings and have their cases sent out for trial. In addition to the three courtrooms, the area will hold meeting spaces for attorneys and their clients, public restrooms and a secure holding space for up to 140 jail inmates. Under construction for the past year, the project cost $8.7 million to complete. It is Phase 2 of a four-part plan to revamp court facilities at the County-City Building. Read more.
