NEW JERSEY - Operations at the Hudson County jail have been 'Topic A' at recent freeholder meetings, with Department of Corrections Director Oscar Aviles taking his lumps from employees who say they've been unfairly disciplined. But Thursday's meeting was a different story, with several employees praising Aviles' four-year stewardship of the jail. Lt. Ron Edwards said Aviles has substantially reduced overtime at the jail, a perennial budget problem. Aviles has also stabilized the workforce, Edwards said. When Edwards began his career at the jail 15 years ago, only 10 correction officers had 12 years or more experience, Edwards said. Now the ratio is much higher, he said. Read more.
