| New Bilibid Prisons probe ordered |

PHILIPPINES - Justice Secretary Raul M. Gonzalez has ordered an investigation into the alleged illegal activities taking place inside the New Bilibid Prisons. According to Gonzalez, reforms are already implemented inside the NBP, but because of the big number of prisoners and the insufficient number of jail guards, other prisoners sometimes still manage to do their nefarious activities. Gonzalez further said he has ordered the NBP chief, retired Philippine National Police Director General Oscar Calderon, to conduct an investigation of the reported illegal activities. The directive of the DOJ chief was brought about by an anonymous letter he received from a wife of an inmate during the time of former Bureau of Corrections chief Dionisio Santiago regarding the alleged rampant illegal activities such as drugs, liquors, gambling and prostitution taking place inside the Maximum Security Prison.
