Three prisoners held a Zapata County (Texas) jailer hostage in a cell for about 45 minutes early Wednesday using weapons made from toothbrushes, officials said. The jailer was beaten and a sheriff's deputy who assisted was cut on the ankle during the skirmish, officials said. Both were treated and released at a Laredo hospital. Investigators said the inmates overpowered the jailer about 2 a.m. as he checked an inmate who complained of being sick. After demanding a car, cell phone and weapons for an escape, the inmates took the jailer out of the cell and tried to break into a control room. Gonzalez said the inmates tried to stab the jailer, but he deflected the shank with his arm. Gonzalez said the inmates never made it out of a secure area and that the situation ended when 20 officers stormed the inmates with batons and shields. No inmates were hurt. |
