The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation participated in the largest earthquake drill in state history November 13-18. This was part of Governor Schwarzenegger’s “Golden Guardian 2008” simulation, which is a homeland security exercise sponsored by the state’s government to ensure its readiness in case of a major catastrophe. It also tests California’s ability to recover swiftly from a catastrophe. Several correctional facilities, including two prisons, a youth facility, and a Southern California parole office, participated, along with more than 100 local, state and federal agencies. The test simulated an earthquake along the San Andreas Fault. In response, CDCR activated its operations center at its headquarters, as well as command posts at Calipatria and Centinela state prisons, the Heman G. Stark Youth Correctional Facility, and a parole facility. In the event of a real emergency, CDCR would focus on securing its facilities and ensuring the safety of its inmates and staff. The department also would be responsible for preventing any riots, escapes, and injuries that might occur as a result of an earthquake. |
